Nepalis in Kabul appeal for immediate rescue

DOHA: As many as 50 Nepalis stranded at the Kabul Airport in Afghanistan have appealed to the Nepal Government for immediate rescue.

The Nepalis have made the appeal after the Taliban took control of the Afghan capital Kabul.

Dilli Khadka of Ramechhap, who came in contact with Khabarhub from Afghanistan on Monday evening, said that the situation in Kabul was chaotic and appealed for their immediate rescue. He has been working there since 2011.

“We (50 of us), who have been working in the same company, are waiting for immediate rescue,” Khadka said, adding “Our future is uncertain here.”

Stating that the government of Nepal has received information that an aircraft would be sent for rescue on August 26, Khadka said that they have to be rescued immediately.

He said, “We are not sure that the government will rescue us soon. Other countries have been rescuing their citizens. But there is no one to take care of us.”

“We can be rescued if the NATO aircraft can be brought here to the airport,” he said.

He also said that he had heard reports that Nepalis working in the US Embassy and the European Union had been rescued and taken to Doha.

Another Nepali citizen said, “Nepalis who have come with labor permits will be rescued anyway, but what will happen to Nepalis living illegally?”

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nepal, there are about 1,500 Nepalis in Afghanistan particularly deployed under the protection of UN missions and embassies of different countries.

The Nepali Embassy in Delhi, which is in charge of Afghanistan, said that it was in constant touch with the Nepalis there and that they were safe.

Meanwhile, the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) has also stated that it is preparing to rescue Nepalis from Kabul by sending a ship at its own expense.

Kumar Pant, President of the Association, said that the Association was serious and concerned about the fate of Nepalis in Afghanistan.

127 Nepalis arrive in Kathmandu

Meanwhile, 127 Nepalis rescued by the US from Afghanistan have arrived in Kathmandu.

Civil Aviation Authority Spokesman Raj Kumar Chhetri said that they arrived at Tribhuvan Airport at 10:15 am on Tuesday morning.

A total of 127 Nepalis have arrived in Nepal after the US rescued 385 Nepalis who were security guards at the US Embassy and brought them to Doha, Qatar.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that only 134 Nepalis have recorded their details for repatriation while 2,000 Nepalis are waiting to be rescued.
